What goes on my girocard after Maestro?

Frankfurt am Main, June 20, 2023: Over 100 million girocards are in the wallets of people in Germany. These cards often also bear a Maestro acceptance symbol. The symbol stands for an additional function, known as a co-badge. This function ensures that money can also be withdrawn and card with the card outside the girocard system, e.g. abroad. The issuance of new cards with the Maestro function will now end on June 30. What does this mean for customers who currently have a girocard with the Maestro function?

Matthias Hönisch, card expert at the National Association of Raiffeisenbanken Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken on behalf of the Germany Banking Industry Committee: "Nothing will change for customers. They can card with their card until it expires. Then, as in previous years, they will receive a new solution when they replace their card as usual. The new girocards will usually feature a different acceptance symbol, such as Debit Mastercard, V Pay, or Visa Debit. Alternatively, a second card will be issued card account.
