girocard half-year figures 2022: over three billion payment transactions at more than one million payment terminals.

Frankfurt am Main, August 17, 2022: girocard Deutsche Kreditwirtschaft has once again recorded strong growth in transaction and sales figures, confirming its position as the leading electronic payment method at the checkout. Consumers are increasingly paying with girocard: In the first half of 2022, it recorded around 3.17 billion transactions – an increase of around 17.1 percent compared to the same period last year (2.71 billion). At more than €134 billion, turnover was around 17.9 percent higher than in the first half of 2021 (€114 billion). The retail sector also increasingly retail sector payments via the girocard system: for the first time, there were over one million acceptance points (up to around 1,023,000 active terminals per month) – i.e., electronic cash registers where consumers paid with girocard. This means that the number of active payment terminals in the first half of 2022 is around 11.0 percent higher than in the first six months of 2021, demonstrating the high level of acceptance of the system by the retail sector.

Contactless payment has now become second nature for many people. Figures from the first half of the year show that it has become firmly established in everyday life and has leveled off at a high level. Overall, about three-quarters (74.3 percent) of all transactions were conducted contactlessly—using card, smartphones, and smartwatches. In the first half of 2021, about 64.1 percent of all girocard transactions were contactless. This represents an increase of about 10 percentage points. Contactless payments, particularly with the digital card, are therefore also the focus of current developments, such as girocard expansion girocard theretail sector.

The strong growth of girocard Germany is particularly evident in the five-year trend: since 2017, the number of transactions in the first half of each year has more than doubled – from around 1.5 billion transactions in 2017 to more than three billion transactions in 2022. Sales rose by around 72.5 percent in the same period (first half of 2017: around 78 billion euros). The success girocard for paying small amounts is reflected in the average receipt value, which fell from €50.66 in the first half of 2017 to €42.36 in the first half of 2022.
