girocard study provides insights into shopping behavior at bakeries

From sandwiches to trend dishes: evening meals remain popular in German kitchens

Frankfurt am Main, 15.10.2024: Not dusty at all! The classic evening meal - also known as "Vesper" or "Brotzeit" depending on the region - is very popular in Germany. Three quarters (78%) of households in Germany eat dinner at least once a week, as confirmed by a recent study conducted by infas quo on behalf of EURO Kartensysteme. Even though the cold evening meal is particularly popular with people aged 50 and over, creative online creations are also inspiring younger people to eat dinner. Tried and tested classics of the baking trade are still in demand, says Sandra Heberer, Managing Director of Wiener Feinbäckerei Heberer GmbH. The representative study examines which types of bread are particularly popular, where customers prefer to buy baked goods and how they pay for them.

There are more than 300 different types of bread in Germany. "In our stores, we see that the demand for innovative snacks is increasing, but at the same time, classics such as our hand-raised bread 'Das Echte' are still the number one type of bread," explains Sandra Heberer, Managing Director of Wiener Feinbäckerei Heberer GmbH, who is currently the fifth generation to run the family business together with her brother Georg P. Heberer. The survey results also confirm that customers appreciate genuine artisan baking: At 49 percent, respondents prefer to buy their baked goods fresh from a local bakery, with more than half (51 percent) doing so at least once a week. In contrast, a quarter (25 percent) prefer to buy their baked goods from discount stores and only 19 percent from supermarkets.

Between classic and modern - which bread creations taste best?

What do consumers focus on when buying bread? More than three out of four respondents (77%) base their choice on taste, while the type of bread is the deciding factor for 59% - followed by price
(43%). The most popular type of bread is multigrain and wholemeal bread
(29 percent), followed by mixed bread (17 percent) and rye bread (16 percent). In addition to the variety of bread types, various trends also shaped the bread culture in this country - from growing your own sourdough culture to social media favorites such as the decorative "Charcuterie Board" and fancy bread boxes for the little ones.

Contactless, fast, and good for your favorite bakery— girocard

The change does not stop at the checkout: instead of rummaging around in their wallets for coins, more and more people are pulling out their card. Although cash is still the most widely used payment method at bakeries, girocard comes in second place. Paying by card particularly popular among 18- to 29-year-olds, with 77 percent, or almost four out of five respondents, having Sparkassen their baked goods with a debit card from German banks and Sparkassen at least once. However, almost two-thirds (61 percent) of respondents were not yet aware that girocard is girocard cheapest payment method. In fact, the most popular payment card in this country pays off for retail businesses such as bakeries with its low transaction costs, even for small amounts. To support their favorite bakery, around half (47 percent) of all respondents want to say "With girocard, please!" even more often when paying in future.
