New acceptance solution for the retail sector Germany's number one debit card

Accept payments even more easily—with girocard Tap to Pay on your iPhone

Frankfurt am Main, September 3, 2024: Germany's most popular and widely used debit card is now even more flexible: The Sparkassen is the first group of institutions to accept payments with girocard Tap to Pay on the iPhone.
With Tap to Pay on the iPhone, the retail sector can accept retail sector contactless payments – using only an iPhone and the Sparkassen S-POS, without additional hardware or payment terminals.

To pay, customers simply hold their contactless or digital girocard, iPhone or Apple Watch, or another digital wallet up to the sales staff's iPhone - and the payment is processed securely using NFC technology. Tap to Pay on the iPhone also supports PIN entry, which includes various options for barrier-free use.

Apple's Tap to Pay technology uses the integrated functions of the iPhone to securely encrypt the data of companies and customers for each transaction. When a payment is processed, Apple does not store any card numbers or transaction information on the device or on Apple servers.

"With around 100 million cards issued, girocard is in almost every wallet girocard Germany. Due to its widespread use and favorable cost structure, it is an integral part of the payment options offered by retailers in this country," says Oliver Hommel, CEO of EURO Kartensysteme GmbH. "The integration of the debit card from German banks and Sparkassen a key milestone in the introduction of Tap to Pay on the iPhone," adds Hommel. Tap to Pay is not only attractive for smaller owner-managed stores or sales stands, the acceptance solution also offers many advantages for larger ones. Following a consultation, customers can pay for their selected products directly on the employee's iPhone and take them home. This eliminates the need for an additional trip to the checkout, which makes shopping more convenient for customers, while retailers no longer need to use additional hardware, which improves employees' sales processes. The result: an all-round optimized shopping experience for everyone involved.

About girocard:
The "girocard" brand stands for the overarching framework of the German banking industry: the girocard procedure as a debit card payment method and the "German ATM system." By using a personal identification number (PIN) the Germany Banking Industry Committee guarantees the secure and easy use girocard. The name and logo girocard were introduced by the German Banking Industry Committee in 2007.
