Increasingly common at more and more cash registers: girocard sees significant growth in retail sector
Frankfurt am Main, February 13, 2024: Last year, customers once again paid more frequently with their girocard at the checkout. With around 7.5 billion payment transactions, the statistics from the German Banking Industry Committee once again show very stable growth: The number of transactions—i.e., payments made with girocard—rose by 11.5 percent compared to the previous year (6.7 billion). Sales increased by 7.1 percent to €304 billion in the same period (2022: €284 billion). The popularity girocard is particularly evident girocard its widespread acceptance in retail sector: Last year, up to 1,132,000 active terminals were available each month, representing an increase of around 8.3 percent (2022: 1,046,000 terminals). This is the largest percentage increase since 2010 and the highest increase in absolute terms in more than 20 years. As a result, the average receipt amount fell by 1.65 euros (from 42.34 euros in 2022 to 40.69 euros in 2023). This shows that the card is used card only for larger purchases but also for everyday needs. People therefore appreciate not only the convenience but also the widespread acceptance girocard.
Contactless payment continues to develop positively
Customers are increasingly paying at store registers simply by holding up their card—and they do so as a matter of course: As a result, the share of contactless payments in the girocard system continued to rise despite already being at a very high level, reaching approximately 84 percent by the end of 2023 (79 percent the previous year). Contactless payments using card physical card smartphone, card smartwatch have thus become an integral part of everyday payment habits for people in Germany.
